Walker Church Council
April 26, 2016
Present: Greg Garman, KC Bretzke, Mary Parker, Al Hildenbrand, Jesse Watkins, Walter Lockhart, Allyson Hayward, Wayne Bailey and Nancy Larsen.
The minutes were approved as read.
Kc gave the financial report. We are about $12,000 in the hole. We decided to ask the bookkeeper Carrie Feldman to provide church council members with a copy of the financial report. The rummage sale made $ 2834.00. In the future, we may want to store rummage in the church basement in advance of the sale. Also, Walker members may donate storage space for rummage in their homes. The silent auction will be Saturday, May 14.
SPRC meets April 27.
Walter is in conversation with Ricardo. Ricardo wants to come to non-church Walker events.
Al reported of the trustees. Last Saturday night three girls got stuck in the elevator. We discussed posting a sign stating that children must be accompanied by an adult in the elevator. A water-dryer will be installed on the second floor. We decided to lock the sanctuary on Tuesdays during the community meal. Walter said rentals are doing well.
Deb Ramage sent an email to the council about peace with justice. The advocacy group Isaiah is trying to get payday lending outlawed in Minnesota or, failing that, a cap placed on interest charged.
There will be a special offering on May 8 or May 15 because we forgot to do it last Sunday. Special offering Sundays will be made permanent.
Wayne is hosting a fundraiser for 15 Now at his house Saturday, May 21.
Mary spoke of the celebration committee. On Sundays during the month of July, topics of sexuality will be aired, excluding the first Sunday of the month. May 15 Doug Rosenquist will speak on Mary Magdalene. Mark Nurnberg of Common Ground will speak this summer. David West will be the new celebration chair.
Walter gave the pastor’s report. On July 1 there will be a new Spanish language immigrant church staring at Simpson. The Simpson Building will be torn down and rebuilt as housing, providing 65 beds. The pride parade will march the last Sunday in June. Walter will not spearhead the float of the reconciling congregations this year.
Howard Kranz was elected lay leader.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Larsen
Church Council Secretary
