Opening Smudge

Lao Tzu # 25, translated by Witter Bynner followed by 5 minutes of silence

Before creation a prescience existed, Self-contained, complete, Formless, voiceless, mateless, Changeless,
Which yet pervaded itself With unending motherhood.
Though there can be no name for it, I have called it ‘the way of life.’
Perhaps I should have called it ‘the fullness of life,’ Since fullness implies widening into space, Implies still further widening, Implies widening until the circle is whole.
In this sense The way of life is fulfilled, Heaven is fulfilled, Earth fulfilled And a fit man also is fulfilled:
These are the four amplitudes of the universe And a fit man is one of them: Man rounding the way of earth,
Earth rounding the way of heaven, Heaven rounding the way of life Till the circle is full.

Scripture Reading: James 1:5-6, 17-18, 21-22, 27 by________________

If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault.  But when you ask, you must believe. You must not doubt. That’s because a person who doubts is like a wave of the sea. The wind blows and tosses them around…

Every good and perfect gift is from God. This kind of gift comes down from the Father who created the heavenly lights. These lights create shadows that move. But the Father does not change like these shadows.  God chose to give us new birth through the message of truth. He wanted us to be the first harvest of his new creation…

So get rid of everything that is sinful. Get rid of the evil that is all around us. Don’t be too proud to accept the word that is planted in you. It can save you.  Don’t just listen to the word. You fool yourselves if you do that. You must do what it says.

Suppose people think their beliefs and how they live are both right. But they don’t control what they say. Then they are fooling themselves. Their beliefs and way of life are not worth anything at all. Here are the beliefs and way of life that God our Father accepts as pure and without fault. When widows are in trouble, take care of them. Do the same for children who have no parents. And don’t let the world make you impure.

  • what kind of banner to have made for the outside of the church,
  • what kind of big sturdy signs to make for the neighborhood,
  • whether to sell baked goods or other food,
  • will we have pick-up service,
  • where will we take the leftover usable items,
  • what price to set on the items that aren’t individually priced (I raised some of the prices this spring),
  • do we want to buy a tagging gun,
  • whether we need to reserve the sanctuary for Monday, October 5 in case cleanup hasn’t finished yet,
  • how much dollar credit should volunteers get for their work, and
  • what format should we use for the Procedures Manual that I will be drafting (electronic shared, 3-ring binder, laminated single page?).
