Sunday Celebration, December 4, 10:30 am
Greetings by Jan DeNoble & Greg Garman
Communal Singing led by Conrad deFiebre & Dianne O’Donnell L Cohen’s Anthem
Communal Reading: Our mission is to nurture spirituality, build caring community & work courageously for peace with justice and mercy.
Invoking the Directions by Al Hildenbrand
2nd Sunday in Advent Reading & Wreath Lighting by the Gehrenbeck-Miller family
Reader: “In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel from heaven stood before them, and the glory of the divine shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see–I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people'” (Luke 2:8-10).
Reader: Today we remember the shepherds, workers for the common good, steadfast watchers isolated and alone, far from the warmth of home, doing the job no one wants. And yet God saw them, God valued them, and God declared the greatest news of all to them alone.
People: Today we give thanks for the shepherds among us, back-breaking laborers on whom our economy stands, those we overlook or rarely see, yet rely on for our very survival, the ones who have much to teach us about watching for God in the darkness.
Reader: On this second Sunday in Advent, we light the second candle as a symbol of the shepherds, agents of the gospel and redeemers of the world. (Light two purple candles.)
Lao Tzu # 49 followed by 5 minutes of silence
The Master has no mind of her own, she works with the mind of the people, she is good to people who are good, she is also good to people who aren’t good. This is true goodness. She trusts people who are trustworthy, she also trusts people who aren’t trustworthy. This is true trust.
The Master’s mind is like space, people don’t understand her, they look to her and wait, she treats them like her own children.
Lyric Poem Crazy Jane Talks to the Bishop, by W B Yeats sung by Howard Kranz
Welcome, Announcements & Offering
Scripture: Amos 5: 11-12, 18, 20-24 read by Janet Court
Therefore, because you tread down the poor and take grain taxes from them, though you have built houses of hewn stone, yet you shall not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink wine from them for I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: afflicting the just and taking bribes; diverting the poor from justice at the gate.
Woe to you who desire the day of judgement! For what good is the day of judgement to you? Is not the day of judgement darkness, and not light? Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?
God says “I hate, I despise your feast days and I do not savor your sacred assemblies. Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them, nor will I regard your fattened doves as peace offerings. Take away from Me the noise of your songs for I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments. But let justice roll down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
