Building & Grounds Minutes September 13, 2017
Building and Grounds Meeting Minutes
Sept. 13, 2017
Those present: Ed Ed Mueller, Al Hildenbrand, Walter Lockhart, Ignascio Amigon and daughter, Jennifer Gahnstrom, Carrie Feldman
Minutes of the August 9, 2017, meeting were read and approved.
It was noted that the elevator call button sticking behavior has not been experienced for over a month.
Piano appraisal update: Both piano technicians consulted for the evaluation of the two grand pianos at Walker have determined the two pianos are of high quality. The smaller grand, on the second floor, was made in the early 1900s and is of the highest mechanical stability. If ever to be sold, it is quite valuable. If ever needed, it’s quality is worth a total rebuild.
The Sanctuary grand piano is in good condition except for the tendancy of the string pins to loosen in the pin block. The cost of the replacement of the pins will be covered by a donation by a member of Walker. As such, Building and Grounds has authorized the repair of the Sanctuary grand piano. Warren Parks has agreed to replace the remaining pins, that haven’t been replaced, with the next size larger pins. This should give time for the piano to “settle” between the repair completion and the Oct. 22 B’hai Unity Concert at Walker.
Having had time to evaluate the sound system equipment needs, it was decided that (1.) Three microphone stands would be purchased. (2.) Three music stands would be purchased. (3.) That bids would be sought for an additional wireless baton mic + receiver, a wireless headset mic with body pack + receiver, and a wireless instrument pickup body pack + receiver.
Concerns about the safety of people using the facilities of Walker were discussed. It was determined that there are two categories. The Policies of making people safe in Walker are for the Walker Council to develope and approve. Whether to have a bench and an accessible exterior receptacle for charging of battery powered electronics, and whether to have a heavy trash container all located at the middle of the North side (the 31st St side) of Walker, is recommended to the Council.
Specific tasks can be accomplised by Building and Grounds to further certain aspects of safety.
(1.) Securing the covers of Walker’s exterior electrical receptacles with small luggage padlocks.
(2.) Programing the Walker internet router radio to turn of Walker’s Wi-Fi connection between 10 PM and 6 AM daily (or some other window of time).
(3) Installing keyed deadbolts on the four first floor bathrooms.
(4) Adding a baby changing station to one of the unisex first floor bathrooms.
(5.) Provide Ignascio with additional cleaning supplies for handling disposing of sharps.
(6.) Assemble a kit (or two, one for each floor) that has the necessary cleaning items for Minimum Safety Precautions after a bathroom incident.
(7.) Train in members of the Walker Community and Staff as the correct procedures for use of the kit for Minimum Safety Precautions.
Providing a means to control access to the basement, by elevator, was discussed. Walter will contact Thyssen Krupp, the original installer of the Walker elevator, for a quote on a lockout, or keyed, in-car button for the basement.
Meeting adjourned.
