Greeters: Jan De Noble and Greg Garman

Communal Singing led by Dianne O’Donnell and Conrad deFiebre

Communal Reading

Our mission is to nurture spirituality, build caring community & work courageously for peace with justice and mercy.

Opening by Al Hildenbrand

Lao Tzu followed by 5 minutes of silence

(reading in place of LaoTzu)

Why we read Laotzu?

Legendary or true, it is told that Confucius, impressed by Laotzu’s influence on people, visited him once to ask advice, ironically enough, on points of ceremonial etiquette.

Baffled by the answers of the older man, to whom etiquette meant hypocrisy and nonsense, Confucius returned to his disciples and told them:
“Of birds I know that they have wings to fly with, of fish that they have fins to swim with, of wild beasts that they have feet to run with.

For feet there are traps, for fins nets, for wings arrows.

But who knows how dragons surmount wind and cloud into heaven? This day I have seen Laotzu and he is a dragon.”

Welcome, Announcements & Offering

Reading:  Psalm 8: 1-9 by Greg Garman

1 O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

2 Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;

4 what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?

5 Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.

6 You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet,

7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,

8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Mindful Direct Action Training: How to support and participate in spiritually grounded protest Saturday, Oct. 6th 9am – 1pm at Common Ground Mediation Center, 2700 E 26th St, Minneapolis. What does it look like to answer moral injustice with mindful/prayerful direct action? How can we “calm the waters” of direct action events for all involved by maintaining a centered, mindful presence? In these turbulent times we are called to act in the rich tradition of spiritually grounded protest for a better world. From the Line 3 tar sands pipeline to police violence and the ongoing attacks on immigrant communities, come learn ways to directly confront injustice while practicing how to be in better community with each other and our Earth. Join us for an introductory training to the skills needed to spiritually ground ourselves and defend our communities. This training will combine mindfulness techniques to reflect on your spiritual calling to act, to practice de-escalation during protests, and to organize for inclusive direct action. This event is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend. RSVP at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScaPPuQoeFaCBrCa1B2Lv_oP1XjB3yg2azX0QcP1UL52E9zhg/viewform
