Saint Lucy’s Ceremony
Santa Lucia
(One)
Night goes with heavy step
‘Round hearth and ‘round the earth.
The sun’s departure leaves
The woods a-brooding.
There in our dark home
Wearing a crown of light,
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!
(Two) (Three)
The night grows large and mute, Darkness shall soon depart
Now we can hear its wings From the earth’s valleys!
In every silent room, As our Lucia speaks
murmuring softly! Wonderful words to us!
There on the threshold! The day shall rise anew,
Wearing a crown of light, Wearing a crown of light!
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Third Sunday in Advent
Reader: “And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for God has looked with favor on the lowliness of this servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name'” (Luke 1:46-49).
Reader: Today we remember Mary, innocent and powerful, sacred and scared, worried and waiting as the Savior of all grows in her womb. She sings boldly when she might be meek; she bears her role in history with the confidence of a warrior; she is the beginning of a mighty revolution as the proud are brought down and the lowly lifted up.
People: Today we give thanks for the Marys among us, who step out of the roles society has planned; unintended pioneers determined to do as God asks; fearless and fearfully stepping out in faith, and beckoning us to do the same.
Reader: On this third Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol of Mary, mother of God, bearer of the Way.
(Light two purple candles and one rose candle.)
Lao Tzu followed by 5 minutes of silence
10 Mitchell translation
Can you coax your mind from its wandering
and keep to the original oneness?
Can you let your body become
supple as a newborn child’s?
Can you cleanse your inner vision
until you see nothing but the light?
Can you love people and lead them
without imposing your will?
Can you deal with the most vital matters
by letting events take their course?
Can you step back from you own mind
and thus understand all things?
Giving birth and nourishing,
having without possessing,
acting with no expectations,
leading and not trying to control:
this is the supreme virtue.
Poetry by Jesse Watkins and David West
Welcome, Announcements & Offering
Reading: Philippians 4:4-7 by Jan Werness
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.
6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
