Opening Smudge

Advent Wreath Lighting by Kelly Waterman

Reader: “And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for God has looked with favor on the lowliness of this servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name'” (Luke 1:46-49).

Reader: Today we remember Mary, innocent and powerful, sacred and scared, worried and waiting as the Savior of all grows in her womb. She sings boldly when she might be meek; she bears her role in history with the confidence of a warrior; she is the beginning of a mighty revolution as the proud are brought down and the lowly lifted up.

People: Today we give thanks for the Marys among us, who step out of the roles society has planned; unintended pioneers determined to do as God asks; fearless and fearfully stepping out in faith, and beckoning us to do the same.

Reader: On this third Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol of Mary, mother of God, bearer of the Way.  (Lighting of two purple candles and one rose candle.)

Honoring Santa Lucia Ceremony by the Sunday School

Night goes with heavy step, round hearth and round the earth.

The sun’s departure leaves the woods a-brooding.

There in our dark home, wearing a crown of light, Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

The night grows large and mute, now we can hear its wings In every silent room, murmuring softly!

There on the threshold! Wearing a crown of light!  Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

Darkness shall soon depart from the earth’s valleys.

As our Lucia speaks wonderful words to us!

The day shall rise anew, wearing a crown of light!  Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

Lao Tzu # 4 Mitchell translation followed by 5 minutes of silence
The Tao is like a well: used but never used up. It is like the eternal void: filled with infinite possibilities. It is hidden but always present. I don’t know who gave birth to it. It is older than God.

Scripture Reading Isaiah 61:1-3 by Barbara Hager

The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;  to provide for those who mourn in Zion– to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory.
