In harmony with the Tao,
the sky is clear and spacious,
the earth is solid and full,
all creatures flourish together,
content with the way they are,
endlessly repeating themselves,
endlessly renewed. When we interfere with the Tao,
the sky becomes filthy,
the earth becomes depleted,
the equilibrium crumbles,
creatures become extinct. The Master views the parts with compassion,
because one understands the whole.
The Master’s constant practice is humility.
Not to glitter like a jewel

Reading: Mark 8:27-37
27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”
28 And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.”
30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
31 Then he began to teach them that the Messiah must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”
34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.
36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?
37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?

Sacred Songs, Profane Songs – featuring Howard Kranz and friends Friday, September 21th, 7:30-10:30pm in the Sanctuary and Fireplace room. Howard Kranz, Jim Feldman, and Karl Jones will sing songs.
Free will offering (suggested $5 – 20.) There will be CD sales, snacks and drinks for sale, socializing, and a Fair Trade sale in the Fireplace Room. Admission, snacks, and Fair Trade is a benefit for Walker Church, while CD sales go to the musicians.

If you are bringing treats containing chocolate, whether homemade or bought, please be aware of our Peace with Justice commitment to boycott 95% of the chocolate sold (all major brand names, most bakery items) because it is literally produced by child slaves. Please use Fair Trade certified chocolate and cocoa in your baking and label it as you would gluten free or other factors.
Walker Community Announcements
Mark your calendar for the Fall Rummage Sale, September 27-30. Volunteers will be at the church September 23-25 to receive your clean, usable items. We can use winter clothing, furniture, household items, jewelry, luggage, toys, books, linens, small appliances, and other items. We can’t accept computers, TVs, microwaves, mattresses, cribs, or child car seats. It’s our biggest fundraiser. Let Lulu know if you can bring in plastic or grocery bags, or storage bins with lids. Be a part of Walker’s music history: Attend and join the singing for the recording sessions of the music CD that makes up the ESSENTIAL Walker sound: Sunday morning songs from our own book, with solo parts by Kent Eklund on piano, Tony Wentersdorf on harmonica, Steve Sandberg on slide trombone, and many more; our choir, led Jim McCreary, will be recording for the CD, Howard Kranz and his own song “Everybody’s Moon” will be heard, plus Wayne Bailey will sing “One Love.” “Amazing Grace” will conclude the program. We hope to have the new CD ready in time for Christmas giving. Timing of the recording sessions will be announced soon. If you have questions, call Jesse Watkins, (612) 296-3723.
JEANNETTE RANKIN: CHAMPION OF PERSISTENCE will be performing a benefit encore for Walker Church on Sunday, October 6th at 7pm. This will be as close to the original production as we can create without the Augsburg Studio lights. Please join us!!! The play was written and will be performed by Walker member J Emily Peabody. Roberta Cullen is the director. $10 suggested donation, pay at the door.

WEAVING WELLNESS: ART, COMMUNITY, AND MENTAL HEALTH RESILIENCE
Tuesday, September 25 I 5 -8 PM. 6 PM Artist/curator presentation by Martha Bird. Please come to a special reception celebrating Weaving Wellness: Art, Community, and Mental Health Resilience, an exhibit curated by artist Martha Bird. A presentation starts at 6 PM, including a Lynn O’Brien creative message delivered through song. Included in the program are special reception activities that invite guests to tour the private collections and library resources. Avivo and Celebrations of Life information tables will be available. There will be drink and food specials available for purchase.

Save the Date: Bread & Puppet Performances Oct 6 & 7th at 7pm
The Grasshopper Rebellion Circus is a celebration of 6000 generations of human revolution against human management, featuring precarious dancing bears and celestial grasshoppers, and powered as always by the hot sounds of the Bread and Puppet Circus Band.
