It is better not to make merit a matter of reward
Lest people conspire and contend,
Not to pile up rich belongings
Lest they rob,
Not to excite by display
Lest they covet.
A sound leader’s aim
Is to open people’s hearts,
Fill their stomachs,
Calm their wills,
Brace their bones
And so to clarify their thoughts and cleanse their needs
That no cunning meddler could touch them:
Without being forced, without strain or constraint,
Good government comes of itself.

Welcome, Announcements & Offering

Reading:  Mark 7:24-37 by Jesse Watkins24 From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice,

25 but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet.

26 Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

27 He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

28 But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go–the demon has left your daughter.”

30 So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.

32 They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him.

33 He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue.

34 Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”

35 And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.

36 Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.

37 They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.

MUSIC CD TO COME: Walker Church ESSENTIAL Pickup Band After years of dreaming, wishing and procrastination, with lots of help I am launching a music CD project. It will present Sundays mornings first half hour of music complete with solo parts as Conrad calls for them.  Imagine a professional quality CD of our pickup band with sections of Kent Eklund on piano, Steve Sanbberg on slide trombone, Tony Wentersdorf on harmonica or Dianne O’Donnell singing a lusty vocal. The goal is to have the CD in a decorataive box, ready by December 1st so you can buy a stock and cover your entire Christmas gift list at once. We will be holding evening recording sessions in the sanctuary during Septemberwith Jim Feldman professionally capturing the sound. It wouldn’t be complete without Howard Kranz’s “Everybody’s Moon,” or a tune from David West and Don Browne’s Fire Roast Mountain Boys. The idea is to put some profit from CD sales toward Walker Church. If you’d like to contribute to help cover project expenses, your dollars will be matched. Advance orders welcomed. FFI Jesse Watkins 612-296-3723

Mark your calendar for the Fall Rummage Sale, September 27-30. Volunteers will be at the church September 23-25 to receive your clean, usable items. We can use winter clothing, furniture, household items, jewelry, luggage, toys, books, linens, small appliances, and other items.  We can’t accept computers, TVs, microwaves, mattresses, cribs, or child car seats. It’s our biggest fundraiser. Let Lulu know if you can bring in plastic or grocery bags, or storage bins with lids. FFI Lulu Philips 612-281-3778.

If you are bringing treats containing chocolate, whether homemade or bought, please be aware of our Peace with Justice commitment to boycott 95% of the chocolate sold (all major brand names, most bakery items) because it is literally produced by child slaves. Please use Fair Trade certified chocolate and cocoa in your baking and label it as you would gluten free or other factors.
