Walker Church Council
October 23, 2016
Present: Lucy Slater, Jan Werness, Allison Hayward, Nancy Larsen, Molly Kuehn-Jackson, K.C. Bretzke, Sally Kuehn, Walter Lockhart, Al Hildenbrand, Tony Wentersdorf, Bonita Blumenauer.
The minutes were accepted as read.
Molly and Sally presented a proposal for a licensed adult day care facility, structured as a limited liability company to be located at Walker Church. The center would use peace at Walker free of charge initially on Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 am to 4 pm beginning spring 2017 with a review planned for summer 2017. We discussed this proposal. Walter mentioned concerns about Walker’s non-profit status if Walker were to rent to a limited liability company as opposed to a non-profit. He also mentioned Walker’s ongoing community meal every Tuesday night with the need for the cooks to use the kitchen on Tuesday afternoons, a potential conflict with the new center. However, he pronounced himself “cautiously enthusiastic about the plan.
K.C. reported for the finance committee. Walker is $20,000 in the red, owing to a shortage in individual donations. Also, there is the additional expense of the apportionments, which we need to pay this year because if we do, one quarter of our apportionments in arrears are forgiven.
The nominations committee has not met since the church council meeting. We have enough people recruited to fill the positions. It was moved, seconded, and passed to form a new church council composed of the SPRC and the Trustees.
Lucy spoke for the SPRC. Performance reviews have been done for all Walker staff. There was a cost of living increase. SPRC will meet with the new district superintendent soon.
There will be a Christmas Eve service at Walker at 4 pm December 24 and a Christmas Day service at Simpson at 9:30 am on December 25.
Walter gave the pastor’s report. The Spanish language ministry at Simpson has been named Living Stone Church – Iglesias Pietra Viva.
The next meeting of the Church Council will be Sunday, December 11 at 12:15 pm. It will be an all church meeting with election of officers.
