Opening Smudge
Lao Tzu # 63 followed by 5 minutes of silence
Act without doing; work without effort.
Think of the small as large and the few as many.
Confront the difficult while it is still easy;
accomplish the great task by a series of small acts.
The Master never reaches for the great; thus she achieves greatness.
When she runs into a difficulty, she stops and gives herself to it.
She doesn’t cling to her own comfort; thus problems are no problem for her.

Welcome, Announcements & Offering
Scripture Matthew 6:1-6 read by Janet Court
Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Karen Branan, journalist and former Minneapolis resident will read from & discuss her newly published book, The Family Tree – A Lynching in Georgia, a Legacy of Secrets, and My Search for the Truth.
The book is about events in 1912 in Georgia: A white man is shot dead on the porch of a black woman. Days later, the sheriff sanctions the lynching of four African Americans–a woman and three men—all of them innocent.
Branan spent nearly 20 years combing through diaries and letters, hunting for clues in libraries and archives and interviewing community elders to piece together the events. During her research she discovered she is related not only to the sheriff, but to one of the four murdered African Americans.
The author will be reading and signing her book at the following events in the Twin Cities. All are free and open to the public. Books will be on sale at all events.
