Building Use Collective Meeting Minutes
August 11, 2015
Present: Steve Sandberg, Ed Ed Mueller, Adel Gardner, Rashard Zanders
Steve introduced Rashard, who has been a neighbor, and has been involved with groups renting space at the old building. He was previously lead teacher, at a program called Skills To Life at Sabathani Community Center. STL had a variety of components including GED preparedness, after school tutoring, daycare, to name a few. Rashard, as I understand it, is interested in starting a similar program on the Southside, with the addition of an earn while you learn aspect, so that participants would, in addition to other skills, also gain the skill of making and marketing a product or service that they could continue on their own. Exactly how Walker might possibly fit into his plans was discussed, but a path didn’t immediately emerge. I think he is primarily looking for an appropriate space, while at the same time seeking funding from various sources. He is going to send a copy of his business plan to me, and I will forward it to the collective.
We also discussed the status of our commercial kitchen (thank you Walter and Margo for clarifying this) see Walter’s memo below:
We discussed further what our collective sees as its primary mission, and how that fits with Walker’s mission.
Respectfully,
Steve Sandberg
Hi Dear Collective!! Here is the answer I got from Walter about the kitchen!
As I understand the health code. If a commercial group wants to use the kitchen to charge people for food they need 1. a person with a food safety license, 2. insurance listing Walker UMC as co insured with at least $1M commercial liability, 3. a business license. If we find someone interested in doing this we will need to get additional license and inspections and the renter will need to be inspected in our site.
It looks to me that our cost for licensing will be about $400 per year. If you find someone who wants to enter into a regular arrangement I will work with them when I return Sept 1 to get it processed. As the license holder I am not comfortable having groups in without insurance and business license.
