Opening Smudge
Lao Tzu # 3 Witter Bynner followed by 5 minutes of silence
It is better not to make merit a matter of reward lest people conspire and contend,
Not to pile up rich belongings lest they rob,
Not to excite by display lest they covet.
A sound leader’s aim is to open people’s hearts, fill their stomachs, calm their wills, brace their bones and so to clarify their thoughts and cleanse their needs that no cunning meddler could touch them:
Without being forced, without strain or constraint, good government comes of itself.
Poetry read by Anne Tiller

Peter Doughty and Margo McCreary’s annual St. Croix beach party: Sunday, July 19 at the usual place: the public beach in the village of Lake St. Croix Beach, MN — a few miles south of the I-94 bridge. (The street going east from St. Croix Trailf to the beach and (pay) parking lot is 20th St. Car-pooling is recommended — there’s no on-street parking.) We arrive close to 2 p.m. and usually stay until about sundown. We’ve had good luck over the years, weather-wise, so we’ve never had to outright cancel; once or twice, there’s been a brief shower, in which case we’ve hung out in the public shelter before going back to the beach. Bring something to eat or drink to share, bring a beach chair or blanket, and bring toys: there’s no lifeguard to bark at you. See ya there / then! FFI Peter or Margo.
The Fireroast Mountain Boys with Special Guest Howard Kranz: Friday, July 24, 7-9pm at Zeke’s Unchained Animal 3508 East Lake Street Minneapolis. Let’s Settle Down and Sing Each Other’s Songs. No cover. Tips appreciated. See Facebook Event for More Info or contact David West
HELP! HELP! HELP!
Patricks Cabaret 5th Annual Roots Rock and Deep Blues NEEDS YOU!! This is the big, annual fundraiser for the Cabaret and what makes it a success is the people willing to volunteer for a 3 hour shift. It’s only 3 weeks away and we need about 30 more wonderful people to step up and volunteer.
Here is a web link that will allow you to sign up with just a couple of clicks. Weather permitting, it will be a fabulous, fun, music and art filled day. And, if you don’t want to volunteer, please join us and support the cabaret with your dollars! http://patrickscabaret.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=9497
Volunteers needed for the Empty Bowls throwing booth at the Powderhorn Art Fair: August 8 and Sunday, August 9. At the Empty Bowls booth we throw bowls, people gather round because they’re so fascinated, and then we can tell them about the Empty Bowls event in November and ask them to come.
We need volunteers to help out — talking to folks about what Empty Bowls does and the event. We are hoping some folks could come from Walker — which means you can talk up your community meal and how we support you, really, how the whole neighborhood supports you. I think people would love to hear from the organizations that are benefitting and what that means.
The shifts are pretty short, and it’s best when we have more folks rather than fewer to talk to people and help out. Here’s the link for signing up for a shift: SignUpGenius
